Real Estate Agents in a Complete POPI Panic

It’s the 31st of August 2020 and our hearts go out to all the Real Estate Agents who are in a complete state of panic because the places they can go to in order to access to homeowner contact information are quickly shutting down around them.

Real Estate Agents have been warned about the far reaching impact that the POPI Act would have on their businesses for the last 7 years, at least.

Nobody expected POPI to be signed into effect on the 1st of July 2020, especially while the world grappled with how to do business during lockdown. Now that POPI has been signed into effect, a 12 month grace period is in place to ensure that all companies dealing with personal information get their house in order or face hefty fines and/or imprisonment.

The reality is POPI is here and more Real Estate Agents should have taken the time to prepare, and more so, their leadership should have pushed harder to get Real Estate Agents to understand the practicality of the impacts POPI would have.

I still have conversations with Real Estate Agents who ask me “Wie is POPI”?. 

One of the biggest impacts of POPI for Real Estate Agents is the way they use bulk email marketing and bulk SMS marketing to reach prospective sellers and buyers. Up until niow, you had to give the prospect the option to unsubscribe from your email, now you are NOT allowed to send emails/SMS messages to prospects who have NOT given you their consent to do so and, you need to make sure you have a the right hardware/software protocols in place to keep your client data secure.

If you are a Real Estate Agent in August 2020, and this is your career then you should take sometime to focus on and answer the following questions:

1. How am I going to generate leads now that I can’t buy databases?
2. How am I going to ensure I am storing my client data securely?

When it comes to Lead Generation, you are going to have to get with the times and implement an Inbound Marketing Solution that will keep generating leads for you.
You are going to have to automate everything you can so you spend 90% of your time on sales productive activities.
And you are going to have to become a King at Content.

You need to start accepting the cost of a new lead is R4,50.
Your world has changed and you are no longer in the world of buying databases, pushing out a bulk campaign and hoping to generate leads.

Your new world is about solving problems and includes;

  • Generating Leads in a sustainable manner
